Thinking about orthodontics probably makes you think about teenagers in braces. At least if you’re like most people, we’ve asked. While this stereotype persists, the reality is that orthodontics can benefit patients of any age. Yes, that includes adults who are seeking our treatment more than ever before. In fact, about 1 in every 5 current orthodontic patients is over the age of 18. That number grows as we at Hamer and Glassick Orthodontics work on debunking common myths about braces for adults.
There’s never been a better time to think about your oral health. We offer many treatment options to address both mild and severe orthodontic problems and everything in between. Although today’s braces are comfortable and efficient, you may still be on the fence about them. If you find yourself reluctant to consider braces to achieve a healthier smile, it’s probably because of what you think you know about them.
Myth #1: Braces are just for children and teens
Yes, many of our patients are children and teens. But, you’re never too old to take advantage of all the benefits orthodontic treatment has to offer. As you’ve aged, you’ve probably learned more about how your oral health relates to your total body health. For many people, this understanding sparks an expiration of dental and orthodontic care options.
Many adults have crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, incorrect jaw positioning, or other issues that they’ve waited years to correct. Others are only looking to improve their smile cosmetically. Whatever your motivation is, braces can give you a straighter, healthier, more confident smile.
Myth #2: Braces will make you stand out
If you already feel a bit self-conscious about your teeth, drawing attention to them with a bunch of metal is the last thing you want. However, thanks to ever-improving orthodontic technology, there are many treatments for adult patients that won’t bring any negative attention. All anyone will notice if your new and improved smile!
Traditional metal braces
Metal braces continue to be one of the most popular treatment options. This is because they’re still one of the most efficient! Modern metal braces, made of high-quality stainless steel, are much more comfortable and lighter than they used to be. These braces deliver excellent results and are especially useful in cases that are more severe or complicated.
Clear braces
These braces, made out of a clear ceramic material, work basically the same way metal braces do. However, they provide a discreet option, since the brackets are designed to blend in with your teeth. The brackets are about the same size and shape as metal braces, but much less noticeable. When we pair them with clear, white, or tooth-colored wires and elastic ties, they are an incredibly subtle way to straighten your smile. This makes them an especially attractive choice for our adult patients.
Invisalign Clear aligners
The Invisalign system is made up of a series of removable plastic trays that fit over your teeth to gently guide them into their best positions. These customized aligners are replaced with the next in the series every 1-2 weeks to keep up with the movement of your teeth. The biggest benefit of this system is the flexibility they provide as compared to fixed appliances. You’ll remove your aligners to eat, drink, brush your teeth, and floss, so there is very little to adjust in your daily routine.
Myth #3: Braces are painful
Modern orthodontic treatment moves your teeth far more gently and effectively than it has in the past, and braces, in general, are more comfortable than they’ve been in the bast. While you may occasionally experience a little discomfort as outlined below, these minor issues are usually easy to take care of with a little patience and knowledge!
General mouth irritation
You may experience some non-specific discomfort in your cheeks, lips, and gums as these sensitive areas get used to the unusual intruders in your mouth. Orthodontic wax is an easy way to get some relief! Make sure the bracket or wire is completely dry, then pinch off a small amount of wax and roll it into a ball. Flatten this ball and then gently but firmly place it over the source of irritation.
Protruding wires
Occasionally, a wire may come loose and irritate the inside of your mouth. This can be fixed with nothing more than an ordinary pencil by using the eraser end to nudge it back against your teeth until it’s flat and out of the way. You can also place a piece of orthodontic wax over the wire to reduce irritation and provide extra stability.
Loose bracket
Loose brackets are a problem we need to know about as soon as possible. Once you let us know what’s happening, we’ll help you decide what the next step should be. In the meantime, however, try sliding the bracket back along the wire to the center of the tooth. Orthodontic wax placed over the bracket can also add stability.
Myth #4: Braces are too expensive
We understand that any kind of orthodontic treatment requires both a significant time investment and a substantial financial investment.
