Hamer & Glassick Orthodontics recently provided free athletic mouthguards to young athletes in the Charlottesville and Crozet area. This special event took place over two days on September 12 and 13.

One of the best ways to prevent injury and save thousands of dollars in dental work is to wear a properly fitted mouthguard while playing sports. Athletic mouthguards are simple pieces of protective gear that help protect the teeth and mouth from significant damage. Mouthguards are available for purchase at most sporting good and retail stores, however, they rarely fit as they should and they do not provide optimal protection. Standard retail options are more cheaply produced and wear down much quicker. In fact, studies suggest that athletes who wear over-the-counter mouthguards are twice as likely to suffer concussions as those who use custom- fitted versions.
Custom-made mouthguards are the best option for protecting teeth and reducing the concussions, as they are created for specifically each athlete’s unique needs. The Hamer Orthodontic team considers many factors, including age, sport, and dental history when designing a custom mouthguard.

The orthodontics team’s free fitting event with was a huge success. Over two days, the team took impressions and provided a total of 65 athletes with custom mouthguards.
